I have a 93 f250 with the 460 that starts fast and runs strong. The problem is once it starts, even if I only run it for a few seconds, it sometimes will not start back up. Last week I started it up, jumped out to let it warm up and it died within a couple seconds. No big deal I thought as I got back in, but it would not restart and I had a strong gas smell coming into the cab.
also, when its cold it always starts right up, but when its been driven a bit and I try to start it up again it takes about 10 seconds before it will start and it sounds like the battery is dying while I am turning it over even though its a brand new battery. This also gives me a strong fuel smell. The starter is less than a year old. I replaced my fuel regulator thinking that might help (what a pain that was to change) but it didnt do any good. I replaced my plugs and wires and still no luck. I would love to drive my truck more but I cant trust it to get me home. any ideas??
Do you have any check engine lights coming on?
Have you checked your fuel pressure? Also check it when the problem comes up (right when it stalls).
How about spark when the issue comes up?
When you start it and sit in the truck and stay off the throttle does the RPM fluxuate?

Just something to check. I had a similar problem but not as serious plague my dd all fall into winter. After replacing the starter, solenoid and some other stuff due to my own fulty diagnosis it died in the autozone parking lot. After a couple hrs and weird symptoms trying to start I saw a glowing main ground wire. My only issues was trying to restart when warm. Check your connections. Should take 30 minutes and will rule it out.
I would check the fuel pressure as to me it sounds like a fuel problem. I bet most people will say the same.

That or a failing ICM. If it always starts when cold and after it runs a bit it won't restart, that points me to that or a failing PIP/stator in the distributor. Just for grins, take a hair dryer and warm it up before starting it, when it had sat for an extended time and you know it will start. If it doesn't, I think you found the problem. Also coil could be suspect. Try the same heat trick on the coil and dizzy. See what that gives you.
