Been changing the in dash lights on my 98 Ranger constantly since I bought it in 2000. I usually let it slide until 2 or more are out, then pull the dash apart and fix them. I seem to be loosing dash lights every 6 months or so. The frequency seems rather odd, but I'm not having any other electrical related problems.
This may not be related to your problem but I have to tell this story to all.
I had a problem in my fathers Lincoln were light bulbs were blowing, dash lights, head lights etc. The cause was a leaky diode in the alternator that was creating a voltage spike in the electrical system. Any other lights blown beside the dash lights?
Do you have a BIG sterio system????
Click here for a pictorial on the subject: Ranger Dash Bulb Replacement. The Ranger dash images are of a 2002 but the procedure probably relates to all 98' and up models.
Also, be sure to click the small images of the dash. They are links to larger close-up photos that are nice and clear.
And here's a tip: As long as you have it apart you should replace ALL the gauge bulbs so you won't have to open it up again any time soon.
