1950 Ford F1 pickup with automatic transmission? Fordomatic?

Hey guys, I recently purchased a 1950 F1 with what appears to be an original factory automatic transmission...

Was an automatic transmission offered in 1950 in a pickup?

If so any ideas on production totals?

I will try and get some pics posted..

Thanks in advanced

Automatic transmissions were not an option until 1953. The factory cross member won't clear any transmission larger than the factory manual options which are pretty compact.

When you post pictures can you include in the cab shifter, under the hood, and under the truck?

After looking at the crossmember, it looks as if the original has been cut, and a new crossmember has been added. The shifter in the cab and the plate on the floor look like ford parts, maybe just not original to this F1...

It's not OEM with the auto trans. It looks like possible a Fordomatic swap from a mid 50's truck. As noted, the stock trans crossmember is cut for clearance and a flat bar was added to hold up the slushbox.

Ford-O-Matic introduced in 1951 Ford/Mercury Passenger Cars & 1953 F/M100/350. Mercury version known as Merc-O-Matic.

Pic from 1948/56 Ford Truck Parts Catalog.

Thanks for the info guys!

One more question.. Provided that the trans is in good working condition, would this transmission be able to cruise at highway speeds (50-60)?

Comfortable cruise speed is more determined by final gear ratio and tire diameter. That transmission will be a straight through gearing, one in, one out.
Figure out what the rear end ratio is. Possibly a tag thereon.

You need about a 3.50 axle ratio to be comfortable cruising 60 m.p.h.

The steering column looks stock, the steering wheel is stock, and someone added the transmission shifter collar from an early 50s car. What I can see from your pictures make it look like a nice installation. Even if the transmission needs work you can still get parts. Lots of hot rodders pull these out so you might be able to find a good used one cheap if you keep your eyes open.
The Ford-o-matic transmissions came in both air cooled and liquid cooled versions. Air cooled works well behind a flathead.
