Having Problems Finding a Tailgate Cap Replacement
A couple of months ago I was unloading something ridiculously heavy from the bed of my truck when I ripped the tailgate cap off. To my surprise the cap is plastic with plastic clips holding it in. I was able to press it back on. It rode well until today when I went to the scrap yard. I slid a busted riding lawnmower out the bed and it happened again.
I have been looking for a replacement cap that is better and stronger than the OEM. However, all I seem to find are caps that are only just covers that go over the OEM. Has anyone found a metal cap that is actually a replacement cap and not just a cover?
I had a diamond plate one installed on my 95 F350.
They put it on with 3M tape. I bet you could find that
in black if bright aluminum is not an option.
I ripped my cap off long ago, then I started getting stuff catching on my latch access panel so I just had a cover plate bent that went over the whole tailgate and cap area. Its 1/4" aluminum plate and I attached it with some 5/16" hexhead selftappers. It definitely added some weight to the tailgate but I dont have to worry about any more damage to it.
If you pick up one of those cheap corrogated plastic tailgate covers that look like a bedliner they fit over the cap, so sliding stuff out will no longer catch the edge. At least that's how I installed mine.
Yahiko- I don't know why I didn't look at Summit. I drive by one of their stores once a week. The full tailgate protector looks interesting.
kengarchow and senix- With the OEM being $58 and aftermarket full covers being $100+, I may just go OEM.
DaveAK and Smokeispower- Maybe sometime later I could fabricate an aluminum plate that is smooth on the top and edge the top. I do have some access to some 1/4 plate.
The reason I went with the aluminum diamond plate caps all the
way around was I seem to have friends that think the top of the
bed is a place to stand. So this way the scratches don't show.
Also makes it less of a problem when dragging lumber in and out.
That 3M double side taps is crazy strong. Someone tried to take
the tailgate cap and all they managed to do was bend the aluminum
in the center. To install OR remove it you need a heat gun.
