alternator question

I have a 1990 f-250 with the standard charging system and I am considering a 165 amp alternator meant for either the ambulance package or school bus. How will this affect my truck?

probably not. if I remember correctly, the older ambulances (like my van) are generators with external regulators. I think the 1990 F250 is an alternator. Can someone else chime in?

I shouldn't say probably not, because you probably just need to get the whole wiring harness.

But whatever, if you are going to do all that, then just do a 3G alternator.... then you don't have to screw with rehabbing the ambulance alternator.

The guy who rebuilt mine said that the ambulance alternators are completely different.

You have a generator?! I thought generators died out in the 60s!

I have located a 165 amp unit that apears tobe in a case identical to mine, i assume the voltage regulator would need to be changed. What im more concerned about is will the added amps harm the standard harness?

You should likely use at least a #2 cable from the alternator output to the battery. That is a bit oversized, but better than too small. A continuous load will build heat over time. Wire Size Charts show #2 rated at 181 amps.

if it were mine, i would just install a 130a 3g alternator from a mid-90s ford taurus. or be a real bad-azz like me and install 2 of them. theres only about 200 write-ups around here about doing the upgrade, and we all recommend upgrading the charge wire to reduce the risk of overheating it. 2ga straight to the battery is all you need.

The standard replacement that Autozone sells for my 93 is 135 amps anyways. Why do you need that much power. These trucks really don't use that much.
