last 2-3 weeks when i turn the key about every 3rd time i get a LOUD clik from the passenger side-voltage reg or solenoid thingy for starter? could it be starter, can it be bypased if it's solenoid.? tried jumper wire with keyset to run and got nothing excuse typingon phone and stuck on road anybody out there can help?
so I had a friend drop off a spare regulator and solenoid and that didn't work so I put a new starter this morning and that didn't work batts are good, grounds are good so what the f is it help me out please could it be ignition switch dash lights up and GPS click when key is turned so I don't think that's it but I don't know
Neutral safety switch? Try starting it in neutral.
If no go, pull the small wire off the starter relay on the fender, bump that small terminal with a screwdriver (a remote starter switch here would be better/safer) against the larger terminal that has the battery wire. It should turn over with this method. If so the problem is in your ignition/wiring/NSS. If it DOESN'T turn over then the problem is starter/batteries/cables/relay. (Assuming you don't have a worse case scenario and the engine's seized or hydro-locked.)
tried starting in neutral no go bumped relay no go batts good cables good tried new relay no go guess I need to see if she's seized. oil is clear and no oil in rad so.I don't think bydropock I just need to try and turn camshaft with a socket to check right?

try crossing the two large terminals on your fender mounted starter solenoid with the keys in the run position, if you batterys and cables are good it should turn over, also try running a wire from the mounting plate on the solenoid to your negative post on your battery this will ensure a ground and ive had the exact same problem before with the click when you turn the keys and each time its happened its been low batteries or ****tyground on the soliniod
You could diagnose it with a test light or voltmeter. Do you have either one of those?
How, and yes to voltmeter, and what type test light? don't know squat bout electrical, can you walk me through procedure?
edit- should probably mention that not even clicking now, turn key, dash lights up,glo plugs clik, and nothing...
home in driveway now, tried turning crankshaft with socket and no problems, thank the diesel gods she isn't seized. so I'm back to square one. yay tried new relay-nothing, slapped on a spare voltage regulator- no joy, checked grounds and cables-good, new starter engine-nuttin but a new record for shortest time to replace starter engine-40 minutes start to finish!! bumped relay-silence WTF I dunno what to do next
I started checking fuses and tracing wires at the ignition switch, when I got to the relay and ran those wires I found the problem. The wire from the relay to the solenoid had come out of the holder on the wheelwell and the pulley for the vacuum pump had cut through it. solder, shrinkwrap and it started right up
