I use brake clean when I change my oil actually. I use it to make sure the threads are clean on the plug and around the filter area to keep it clean. I've been doing it my whole life and never had an issue. It dries almost instantly (That's why it feels "cold") so there isn't really anything left to contaminate.
The Ex is only 77k miles but has seen a lot of 4x4 hi lately with this Michigan weather. The main reason for changing out both the front and rear is that while washing it today I noticed a rubber hose hanging down from behind engine. So I got underneath and started poking around and figured out that it was the differential breather line. Looked at the back and that one was missing also. So I guess no is a good time to change the fluid, just in case.
I would love a set of Mag Hytek covers, but the wallet is still smoldering from the bulletproofing. Plus the truck already has a set of the extra capacity ribbed aluminum covers.
How do I verify the limited slip if the tag is gone from the diff cover? Will the door tag tell me?

Not to worry, nothing you would use is nearly enough to contaminate anything.
Yes door tag will give you a code
If you do have limited slip it will be letter and a number, that also will give you your gear ratio unless it's been changed.
