optima's do not work well in vehicles that don't get driven regularly.
This is for my wife's daily driver, so that wouldn't be an issue.
If you google "optima battery quality decline" you get thousands of hits from various forums. Apparently it was about 3 or so years ago that people started noticing it. Maybe they are still fine, maybe not, but with so many alternatives out there, why take the chance, especially given how expensive they are.
I replaced my original factory battery (which lasted 9 years) with an ever start maxx from Walmart. I put it in in November of 2012. Cranks great now but it hasn't been in long enough for me to speak of its longevity. It is cheaper than most I will say that. I also read a lot of different places that the batteries from Costco (Kirkland signature) are supposed to be very good. Most sites had them rated #1.

That's going to be true of any battery. AGMs are supposed to be better in this regard but all batteries have a self-discharge over time. The parasitic draw on modern vehicles is another big factor - clocks, security systems, aftermarket sound systems, ECU/GEM, etc. It's a mystery why manufacturers don't include an outboard charger/maintainer, it would likely save a ton of money on warranty service. A cheaper battery maintained properly will last as long or longer than a top of the line model that is neglected.

I agree here 100%. My bike battery sits connected to a battery maintainer (NOT a trickle charger) all winter. In the spring, I can get on and ride and not have to worry. The maintainer cost all of about $30 on amazon.
I don't think the OP needs to worry about this, as it is his wife's daily driver.

very true, but the problem we had with them was that after they went dead from sitting, they could rarely be salvaged. whereas, a standard battery could usually be brought back to life if it was fairly new.
we replaced a LOT of optimas under warranty for guys who put them in their summer cars and hot rods.
