Transmission question

Hi guys, I got another question I need help answering. How can you tell which transmission you have by the VIN #? And also, is there a difference between the 4r75w and the 4r75e transmissions? Thanks again for any and all help!!

The transmission type is not encoded in the VIN.

The difference is the gear ratio.

Go Here

and click on the vehicle tab at the top

then enter in your VIN

then on the right, at the top, it will display the primary features your vehicle came with. there is a down arrow key you can click and it will show you everything your vehicle did and did not come with.

FWIW, my 2006 says it came with 4R75E

This is true, but the VIN can be used to pull up a build sheet for the vehicle, and that will have the tranny type on it.

Could I use a 4r75w to replace a 4r75e or are they not compatible with the PCM?

Correct, but only if the vehicle is new enough for data to still be available. The OP gave no indication as to how old his truck might be.

Its a 2005 Expedition. I ran the VIN and it said that mine has the 4r75E. I can get a good deal on a 4r75W, I just don't know if they are interchangeable.

If my information is correct, the only difference is that the 4R75E has a turbine (input)shaft speed sensor and the 4r75W does not. If that is true then you cannot use the 4r75W in place of the 4r75E because your truck needs the sensor.
