Tag on the diff reads "5F17" and the casting marks say "DIF" and "38" Any ideas as to meaning?
5F17 = Assembled June (F) 17, 1965 (5). The rear axle tag contains more than just what you posted. See pic for examples.
1965 F100 could have a 9" rear axle without Limited Slip. Or a Dana 44 or Dana 60.2 rear axle with Limited Slip. Dana's have an inspection cover, 9 does not.
AXLE code stamped (2nd line-far right) on the Warranty Plate, decodes to the type of rear axle, ratio, with or without limited slip, and its capacity.
Warranty Plate located on the left door face below the latch.
There is no standard ratio. 1965 F100 w/a 9" rear axle, 3 M/T = Most common ratios: AXLE codes: 07 = 3.25-1 / 08 = 3.50-1.
My favorite show on the Food Channel is Restaurant Impossible. This thread is turning into RearAxle Impossible!
