I figured I'd just come to you guys on this one. My step dad and I are just wrapping up his restoration on his '65 I6 Mustang Coupe/302 Swap.
We had everything dialed in but then it sat for a few weeks and mysteriously stopped getting spark.
No coil or regulator/HEI dizzy installed.
I ended up replacing the ignition switch, pulling the entire harness back to the firewall plug and making all the repairs to the harness that could have been hiding any issues. Now it starts and runs but its starting in the "ON" position and I reckon the starter is probably engaged the entire time its idling.
sounds like your ignition switch is wired incorrectly. the coil + wire(to the hei) should be common with the 12v source in to the switch in "start" and "on". the wire that runs to the solenoid should only be common with 12v in "start". my guess is that you have those two wires flip flopped on the switch.
I tried switching the wires before I came to y'all. When I swap them over it doesn't turn over at all.
I have power still but it doesn't kick the starter when I turn the key to start.
Just an update... There is an actual plug to the ignition switch so there's no way to mix the wiring up at the switch.
Since I've stripped everything back in the engine bay I must have a gremlin somewhere between the switch and fuse box/ firewall???
It seems weird that it fires up with the wires switched on the solenoid but I don't get anything when it's wired up correctly!

If you switched them and it isn't cranking in the run position, that is the correct way to have them, now your problem is that you do not have power on the start wire from the switch. I think it's a Red with a blue tracer.

EricJ - I'll put a volt meter on it and check. I'll get some pictures shortly as well.
