Help!!! 96 explorer starter removal! 4x4!!!!

Hello. I have a friend with a 96 4.6 4x4. He tried to put a new starter. He couldn't figure out how to get it out! So I got called out. I can bearly get under this dam thing. I'm lost on how it comes out. It stuck by oil pain and front diff housing. It not much that I'm stuck by 1/4" at most. Can anyone please help. Sorry but I can't search off my phone!

You have posted in the Explorer section. A 96 Explorer did not come with a 4.6L as you asked about.

I had a 97 Mountaineer AWD with a 5.0 and starter removal was pretty straightforward. I recall having to use an extension with my ratchet and socket.

Does your friend have 4.6 or a 5.0?
