rear axle swap, now no brakes.
#16
Hi guys, just wanted to update ya'll on where things landed. Firs of all to I'd like to clarify that YES, my front brakes are working great and always have been during this process. Stopping in a forward direction has never been the main issue, stopping in a REARWARD direction has been the trouble. So much so that even on a flat surface the truck felt as if it wasn't going to stop at all in reverse. After some discussion here and some digging around what I came up with is the following.
The wheel cyls. that were in the rear end were 15/16 inside diameter. I found that a 1960 F-350 used a Dana 60 with some 1 1/4 inch cylinders, and they bolt in to the later rear, although you do have to clearance the backing plate a little bit. Once installed braking is back. It's still not great in reverse but isn't flat scary like before, and travelling forward is back to how it used to be.
