I've googled around, but I haven't found a definitive answer so here's my question:
What are the sizes of the fittings on the 99-2000 hydroboost units.
I'm seeing 18mmx1.5 for the pressure and 16x.1.5 for the booster to the box, but I'm also getting conflicting information saying that both fittings are 16x1.5. Can anybody clarify which fittings the 2000 booster should have?
Also is there a difference in fittings on the post 2001 hydroboost units?
I haven't been to the Junkyard yet to pick up the booster, so I'm trying to figure out what I'm getting before I go.
18 and 16 sound right. Factory lines that go in have a O ring to seal at end. I eliminated that when I did my custom lines by placing ferrules inside the hydro boost holes so then I could just run lines with an inverted flare instead.
Straight off pirate. 18 and 16 are right.
These are the fittings , but like I say eliminate the O ring and drop in ferrules so you use the inverted flare style so there's no over torquing and wrecking O ring. Any hydraulic shop will carry it.
Do the ferrules just replace the o rings or do I need fittings to match?
You still buy conversion fittings like above to adapt to -6 AN, BUT the end of fitting that goes in the unit is a flare that mates to the ferrule that was dropped into the holes.
Ferrules look like this
Bring it all down to a hydraulic shop. When u get hoses made get -6 AN ,swivel ends, 90 degree style
Last tip for mounting is instead of a nitemare to drill /bolt through firewall I made a simple 1/2" plate that I tapped 4 holes and welded to firewall so I could bolt up unit from under hood. Tried the awkward laying under dash thing and even still bolts came into interference with steering column webbing/gussets until I decided to weld this plate on engine bay side of firewall.
Run bolts just the right length or pre drill firewall to extend through plate and firewall. So easy to install/remove now
Ok, I have my Hb return line plumbed into a t before my power steering cooler. I'm experiencing an issue with brake pedal drag once I start the truck. When I crank the truck the pedal sinks about an inch loading up the brakes. I've done a little research and this seems to be due to the return t being before the cooler. So if you have a steering pump without two return ports, does the return t need to be right at the pump? Or am just gonna have to upgrade to a two return port pump?
Most likely u need to bleed the system. Your gonna wanna put your front axle on stands. Here's how I recall doing it.
Pump brakes about 5 times and cycle steering lock to lock with engine off for a few minutes.
Start engine and again run steering lock to lock and pump brakes a few times during. Shut it off and look at power steering fluid. Look for foaminess and bubbles. You need to get rid of all of them. It may need time to settle overnite and repeat the next day. That's how I got it.
Is the pump whining?
I have a T in my system, no hydro boost resevoir twin ports.
I bled on it over the course of two days, there is no whine. I read where someone having a similar problem. I have my t before the cooler, I think I need to t at the back of the pump. The steering gear puts out a higher pressure for the return than the hydro boost, this "back pressure" causes the hydroboost pedal to drop a little when I start the engine.
U know looking back at my own pic looks like I did swap out to a hydroboost style 2 port resevoir.
I had it working fine with a T though. I just got the pump from a wrecker in near new shape if I recall so I swapped it.
I run a trans cooler as well but I think it goes from the steering box to the hydro boost.
