Bought a 93, have a few problems.

Hey guys. I just bought a 1993 F150, regular cab short bed 4x4, 351 with E4OD Transmission. The truck runs and drives great. It has an exhaust leak, like many of these trucks have. I seems to be coming from around the cat, not the exhaust manifold. Is this a common place to leak? Also, the heater doesn't work, PO said the blend door wasn't working properly. Is this also a common problem? He had recently replaced the heater core. Thanks for any help.

I took out the glove box, removed the heater core cover today. The cable from the hot/cold switch works fine, the blend door is rotating all the way and nothing is blocking it. The heater core is definitely getting coolant, it is hot as well as both lines. The heater core cover wasn't sealing very well but I sealed it up with some HVAC one-sided sticky insulation. After all that, still no heat. The PO said it needs a YH486, which is HVAC recirculation door actuator, catergory: heater blend door actuator(rockauto). It looks to me that the cable is the blend door actuator, and this part he is referring to is for the fresh air/ recirc door. Am I wrong? What other reasons could there be for no heat?

Not sure how you concluded that an exhaust leak is common to F Series trucks. But have you actually inspected your exhaust system to see if there are any tell-tell signs of an exhaust leak? If you have, try to post some pics of the spot(s) where it seems to leak from.

Your generation of trucks may or may not have vacuumed actuated HVAC systems. On my 91' there is a white vacuum line that connects to the blend door vac actuator that is mounted to the top of the heater box; under the hood on the passenger side. The line is plastic and gets very brittle. It may look good visually, but they become porous causing a leak.

Well I found the problem with my heater the other day. There is a white plastic piece that is next to the heater core that clips to the top of the blend door, and that was missing. It seemed like something had to be missing, there was a gap there but it at the time, and still now, that someone would remove that. I found that out after I took apart a parts truck that my dad has, an 89(I think) f250. I took the piece out of the parts truck and put it into mine, now the heater works great. I wish I had checked that sooner! But it's working great now, too bad spring is here and there isn't much use for a heater in the central California spring.
