My 78 f250 4x4 with a 460 mounted to a 4spd from my old 351m and I'm hearing some crazy noises underneath the truck when the clutch is engaged. It sounds like a grinding noise but I don't know how else to describe it. My dad says it's the throwout bearing but I would just like some more input before I decide to pull the transfer case and transmission
Throwout bearing and or pilot bushing. Have someone push on clutch while you look under and listen to see if you can pinpoint where grinding sound is coming from. Neal down beside truck, don't get under it.
I was afraid that was the case. I'm concerned that my exhaust is too close to the bellhousing to get it off so I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I think a wobble socket might let me in there
I too have the same problem, on my 78 f100 w/302 4sp Granny first. I hear it when the clutch pedal is depressed and in 1st gear when clutch is out ? Was planning on replacing throwout bearing and bushing, how hard is this to do ? And should I replace clutch at same time even if it's good since I have it apart ?
When the pedal is depressed, sorry I should have specified. Mine is having the same issue as yours Underthoaks. I'm not gonna change my clutch because I just replaced it when I did my swap which was only like 2 years ago. The clutch still works fine and seems fine but if I take it apart and I find a problem then I will replace it
How long can I drive on it like this without causing damage to other parts? I have to drive at least another hour and a half and 45 minutes of that being at 70 mph in order to get home to my shop
