Diagnosis Help, Please

This afternoon, when leaving work, I rolled the windows down (it was 70 degrees today) and started the Expedition (information in signature). Through the passenger front window I heard a loud ticking noise that has not been so pronounced in the past. I went to exhaust place, they put it up on rack, inspected...no exhaust leak. Off to mechanic. He said sounds like a lifter. Driving home, after making last turn, engine coughed, coughed, coughed and I shut it off...200 yards from the house. I did not restart the engine. I was afraid to risk further damage. Before turning it off, I felt like I could make it to the house but my better judgement said don't try it.

What do you think?

Lifter?
Timing jumped?

About a month ago, I changed all plugs and COPS. They ALL were still in tact after this occurred. My initial thought when I first heard the loud ticking today was that...geez I did not get one of the plugs tight.

Sounds like you blew a spark plug out of the head.

Thanks alloro. Would that not have snapped the COP at or near its bolt?

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, sorry over not being decisive but it just doesn't always happen the same way. Your best bet is to start the engine and use a piece of hose, holding one end to your ear and move the other end near each COP to see if the noise becomes louder.

Thanks again for the reply, alloro. I talked with my mechanic a little while ago (I'm too busy right now and need vehicle for my wife's business) and he said the #4 had backed out, but was still contained by the spark plug boot. He also commented that the coil and spring were fine with no visible damage. He was able to put the plug back in and tighten it checking for loose play. I told him to put the #1 COP on a NEW spark plug for #4 and put the #4 COP on #1 in case the COP was damaged. That way it'd be easier for me to reach if need be.

LESSONS LEARNED:

I was tired when changing the plugs. It took 4.5 hours to do both #4 and #3. As I recall, I was not comfortable with the way #4 went. Start early in the morning when you are fresh. Also, All COPS can appear perfectly normal and you can still have a blown plug. I was lucky that I was only going about 10 mph when this occurred and only a couple hundred yards from the house.

At least it was a cheap fix.
