I had been using Standadyne Performance all winter with no problems. When summer arrived I started having a problem with the packaging and was wondering if anyone else is having this problem. The stuff is swelling in the bottles, and when you either remove or put a pin hole in the foil cover it squirts out like a fountain. Then this morning I started smelling something in my truck, I had a ½ used bottle in a plastic bag inside my console, the cap got blown off. Luckily I had it in a bag so the mess won’t be that bad to cleanup tonight.
Anyone else having this problem and if so what have you been doing about it?
Until we're ready to use it, I guess we'll just have to keep it stored in the fridge, huh? That should make my wife happy. Hey, I do have that old refrigerator in the basement. Guess I could store it there....
Anyways, I just poured in a 1/2 bottle of the performance formula at my last fill-up. I'm pretty new to the diesel thing. How often do the rest of you use it? It is more of a winter thing, right? I was really curious to see how it would effect my fuel mileage. I also need to get some of the lubricity formula, as it is time to change my fuel filter. Do you add it more often than just at filter change?
Man, I sure will be glad when get all this diesel maintenance stuff memorized.........
I have only used the performance formula and plan on using it all year logn. I've had the truck a little over a year, and just started using the stuff in the fall. There have been a lot of threads around the use, it seemed like most people say to use performance formula all year.
You might want to use Performance Formula Jr. or Lubricity Formula in the summer.
Performance Formula has anti-gel in it, which is not really a problem right now. It won't hurt, but some report a slight decrease in performance with the anti-gel.
Power Service makes Diesel Kleen. It comes in the grey bottle (not the white bottle) and is available at Walmart and Tractor Supply. Diesel Kleen has cetane improver, detergent and lube, but not anti-gel. Lots of people run Power Service products. Diesel Kleen might be your better choice in summer months.
I have a few bottles of Performance Formula in my truck at any given time and have never experienced the expansion issues you mention. While western Washington summers are not that hot, we did travel through central California to San Diego last July and did not experience any problems with the Stanadyne bottles.
You may want to give Stanadyne a call and see if that is normal. If it is not, they may be interested in checking out your batch???
And a second side thought:
I haven't noticed a significant difference using Stanadyne but do like the injector cleaners and lubricants in the Performance Formula. I am now only using the Stanadyne occasionally in the summer but regularly in the winter.
I have run alot of Diesel Kleen and am very pleased with it. It seems to give a faster start up, good mileage, and less smoke. It does have an anti gel that works OK, but My fuel did gel while I was driving once last winter when the temp got down to 9 degrees. Stanadyne is probably the best, but Diesel Kleen is more readily available and its alot cheaper.
