Should I do an egr delete?

I'm new to the powerstroke world. I have a 2003 6.0 and I was wondering if I should do an egr delete. Does it effect the way the truck runs? And what does it do for the truck?

Since you have an 03 you have the better egr cooler. If your ect and eot are not over 12 degrees different I wouldnt worry about the delete. It doesnt help the engine run better necessarily.

Okay thanks. How do I find out if they are over 12 degrees or not?

you need a Gauge to see ECT vs EOT when driving 65mph for 30 plus minutes steady

if you can get away with egr deleate then do it your moter and engine sensors will stay cleaner its the way to go if you don't do emmissions test

But First thing you should do IMO is Find you a digital Gauge setup to check your truck out

www.scangauge.com look at the SGII Model

www.dashboss.com I think they only have 1 unit but its sweet gauge

theres another one torq app you can setup for around 30 bucks

Also Auto Enginuity from Riff Raff diesel this is the best one so far for a DIYer since it can test injector output and can Control things for testing

One of the more hotly discussed subjects around here right after fuel mileage and what oil and coolant to use. So far you have one vote for and one vote against.

My 2 cents are: If you decide to do it, delete or block off the EGR cooler but leave the EGR valve in place. The the valve is a actuator and a sensor, the signal is used to help determine operating speed of the coolant fan.

Reasons to not delete.
1. It's against the law. (Know how well local laws are enforced)
2. Your early truck has a strong cooler on it. ('05 thru '07 were the common failers)
3. May turn on the check engine light depending on computer flash version.

Reasons to delete.
1. If it's not there it can't leak. (Coolant in cylinders can stretch head bolts and cause head gasket leaks)
2. Possible less engine wear from not dumping sooty exhaust into intake.
3. Possible small power gains for same reason.
4. Fewer turbo issues for the same reason.
5. Possible reduced engine coolant temps and cooking coolant which can clog oil cooler.
