coolant filter installation

Has anyone considered splicing into the Top and Lower Radiator Hoses for the Coolant Filter? Im just asking a question, I may be totally off base here.

I'd like to know your thoughts on why.

You can get in-line upper radiator hose filters.

Gano is one brand.

Not sure what micron those will filter down to.

There are in-line heater hose filters too.

In-line filters in a coolant system are not a good idea. Water pumps are not positive displacement pumps. Their output (flow rate) is a function of RPM and pressure (due to restrictions in the system). As the pressure rises, the flow rate will go down. So...if you install a restriction (filter) in the line, you WILL reduce the flow rate through the radiator.

Bypass filters siphon off a very small fraction of the total flow for filtration. And..if they plug up with contaminant, there is no harm done to the total flow.

This is exactly why. Restricting the flow can lead to cavitation in the system.

If your truck has more than 20 to 25K miles on your 6.0, you are wasting your time and money installing a coolant filter. The oil cooler restriction resulting in EGR cooler damage/failure has already been done. I put one on at 40K miles as a feel good thing. Have 115K on my X and have changed the coolant filter twice. Cut open both filters and very very little residue. Changed the oil cooler and EGR cooler around 80K miles as another feel good thing. Checked old oil and EGR coolers flow and all seemed well. FWIW!

I'm not sure exactly how many miles bodywerks has on his 03 but this flush was done within the past couple of months.

I'm going to disagree with this statement. I put my filter on at 70k and it has done its job as evidenced by:
1. During the first half dozen filters, the diminishing flow to the degas bottle after 12-18 months.
2. At 180K, my deltas are still less than 10*.

Half a dozen filters?

Sheesh, I doubt you're collecting a pound of debris in each filter. Filters are good for 40,000+ miles, many are considered 100K filters.

I was following the 'change the first one at 500mi and then 1000mi or 1yr thereafter'. But now I just go by slowing of degas bottle flow, or about 2 years (which is about 30K mi for me)

IIRC that was what he Got Flushed out of his New Oil Cooler AFTER he Already flushed the System with Restore Products Prior to the New Oil Cooler change

He thought it was from the restored coolant flow from a New Oil cooler I Agree

But IMO the Problem was the Thermostat was Not removed for the Flush Process Plus I would Stuff a Garden Hose in it at EACH Point the system got opened up let it flush with drains open so Right at the EGR Cooler and Heater Return Side

You can get that hose in there in some spots that Reverse Flow and that's like Brushing your Dogs Hair against the Grain its going to stand straight up and all the S#!^ is going to come Shooting out of there

Theres Ways to get all the crap Cleaned out Guys your just going to have to get creative and Flush this truck Like Nothing you ever Imagined

I doubt any of us will ever come across a vehicle that needs extensive cooling system flush like this on Ever again

And the Funny thing is Some trucks are Clean

I think it all Hinged on the Type of Day the Block cleaning sector of the Factory was having that day

I think there's a lot to be said for this, on these engines, on these trucks and on anything manufactured in an auto plant......the 'lemon law' would point to that too. IMHO

My 07 has 112,500 on it now and as far as I can tell (I've owned it about 10,000 mi.) is all stock and original, I drained enough coolant to install a sinister water filter around 105,000 and got about 1/8 teaspoon of grit in the drain bucket at that time and just changed my first filter around 111,000 cut it open and found zero sediment in the canister and the paper filter look clean. My truck has <10* deltas and it still has Ford Gold coolant in it (which I had checked for proper PH) so I tend to agree with Benny here. My 2cts.
