I had something like that happen on my 6.0 while towing up a hill in NC. I pulled over and unplugged the EGR valve (with the engine off), then started back up the hill with no problem. After I got home I cleaned the EGR and re installed it. Worked ok until the next time I towed and it did the same thing. Unplugged again and worked fine again. That time I left it unplugged until I deleted it.
Sounds as if your egr valve is sticking open. Might want to pull it and look at it. You will see if it stuck open. You can clean it with brake cleaner.
I would use Carb Cleaner to clean the valve. Ford has advised against Brake cleaner. Even if you are careful, the solvent can "wick" up the shaft and contact the seals.

OK, guys. Picture is not great, but hopefully you can see it well enough. From what I gather, it could be a lot worse than this. I will definitely need to replace the bottom o-ring. Supplier? Part number? Appears to be in the closed position.
Thoughts?
I almost blew a head (cranial) gasket trying to pull the thing out!
By the looks of the EGR valve, I don't think this was the problem. I could be wrong, though. If it is not the EGR valve causing the problem, where is the next place to look? Turbo? I pulled the intake off and inspected the fins. Seems to be spinning fine. They have a light coat of carbon buildup on them. Not sure if that is potentially a problem...
