Angry Stumped

I am having a crazy problem with my truck. After about 15-20 minutes of driving the engine will die when allowed to idle. Then when I try to start it will just crank over, and when I let off the key it will attempt to start. After about 2 minutes of this, then it will start. Sometimes it does it again, sometimes it doesnt. GRRR. I have replaced the fuel filter, & the ignition switch. It was built about 6 months ago. I have tried everything I know to do to fix this problem but still have not yet found a solution. Any Help on this situation will be GREATLY appreciated.

hmmmm bad gas maybe. How close is your fuel line to the motor, you might have some of it vaporizing in te line and flooding the motor out due to increased pressure. You might also have a carb problem. Does it do it after you shut the motor down after driving for a while?

Yes, it deisels after driving for a while and some times it wont start and does fire in off stroke after driving. The fuel line is close to the engine and the header. I read about the vaporizing but I felt the line after driving and it didnt feel too warm. Should I put some sort of heat sheild around it? I know it is not bad gas.

Bad ignition module -classic!

Get your module tested at a parts store. Buy a new MOTORCRAFT module and mount it 1/4" off the inner fender with spacers.

FordLuvinJarhead:
Yes I definitely agree with your comments about FTE. There is definitely a great wealth of knowledge coupled with intelligence here. It’s fun to learn and share with professionals.
The thing I am most impressed with is the tolerance for those who have modest knowledge and are trying to learn. On other boards they would simply get blasted or called stupid.
Here the obvious pro’s simply keep either asking the question different ways to get the info to help or back away a bit and let another chime in. they usually arrive at a solution.
Discussions are open and honest.
I have watched this board for many months before getting involved. We got the straight dope here on bushing 400 rods for Cleveland pistons just by searching, and reading…
We have gained much knowledge from this group. I figured it was time to try and give back a bit…

Much of this success is due to the professionalism of the Moderators
Yep if there was a global award for Moderators I’d vote for them

I might check the coil too - they can fail when they get hot too and cause similar problems. It's pretty easy to swap one from another car to test...

dieseling is usually caused by hot spots in the combustion chamber (carbon build up glowing red hot, too hot a spark plug, etc.). I'm not sure the problems would be related.

Also, the pickup coil in the distributor can cause the same problem. I have a 400 that had those symptoms and after changing the module box and the coil, it ended up being the pickup coil
