Why does my exhaust always smell like gas? I get wiffs of burning oil when cruising on the highway... but there is a 100% of the time smell of gas... I'm not getting a CEL either but my crappy code reader says it's unlikely to pass a e-test (not sure how it figures that out).
I assume you still have the cat in the exhaust system? I've heard they really smell bad without one.
The code reader won't tell you it's ready for e-check because unless it's a cali truck, it's not really OBD2 compliant, no O2 sensors behind the cat. Since it came that way from the factory, it will pass. The code reader sees no second set of sensors, so it assumes they haven't cycled through their test.
May need to check for pending codes. If your O2 sensors are not switching properly you may be running rich. Otherwise possibly check for vaccuum leaks as the ecm couldbe dumping unneccasary extra fuel. Do you have any broken manifold studs? Could be part of the smell.
