Hey guys. Iv noticed my mileage seems to be slowly getting worse. I got high 10s when I purchased my truck and my last 3 fill ups have been 8... Crappy! Unloaded, not much idling (maybe 10 minutes per fill up on super cold days), no lead foot driving, etc. I haven't changed my driving style or my truck any and my mileage is going down.
Is it worth while to do a tune up on these V10s? Plugs and wires for starters and clean the air filter (I have a CAI) sure wouldn't hurt. But what would be the cause of my poor mileage? Is winter weather playing a role?
2mpg is a somewhat drastic decrease in your case- that's 20%. I suspect something big is happening.
Start with questioning the manner of calculating mpg. Have you changed any tires (sizes)? How consistent is your refueling? Completely full every time is the only way to do it (unless you have a Lie-O-Meter). Same gas station, same level ground at gas pumps...
Checked your tire pressures lately? You could have a slow leak. Also the colder weather directly relates to lower tire pressures.
Maybe a dragging brake. Has anyone adjusted them recently? Do you have rear drums that automatically adjust when you go in reverse? If so, maybe it's too tight.
I would suggest to clear you mind of all prejudgments and consider EVERYthing that your truck has encountered in the last few months.
My truck really hasn't changed at all. I checked my tired about a week ago and topped em all off to 80 psi. I used the same gas station and it has a pretty level parking lot.
Im wondering if I don't have an alignment issue. My trucks kinda jerky when I hit a bump and makes an odd grinding/vibration noise when I drive on snow sometimes. Could be the road though
I'd also think winter fuel blends. My truck and fuel miser car each have taken 1-2 mpg hits. But again it could be anything else. Brakes dragging a little (stuck slide pins, frozen caliper from rust)? Idling eats my mpg bad. Good luck!
Things are looking up! Filled up today at exactly 9.5 mpgs. Not good, but not 8 either! I took a couple trips to my gfs house this week @ 30 miles round trip each to change things up. Maybe since the roads are bad, Im doing more in town/slow driving, thus killing my mpgs along with it. If that's the case, then these V10s are aweful picky lol
