My name is jon. Im new to the forum and have questions about 89 f350 4x4 crew, as this is the first ford ever owned (no eye rolling, plz). Its an xlt lariat, 460, c6. Not familiar with much, but learning.
Im having issues with the tanks switching over. Not sure if its the valve or some other issue. This is the first ford ive ever owned at not familiar with it. Just had to install a new steering column thanks to a possible theif.
When you flip the switch it doesn't switch the tank? Often times that can be switched by replacing the switch, or removing it and seeing if the connections are corroded or dirty.
How often does the selector valve go out? The last truck I had, I could hear the valve switching, but not with this one. Ive looked into a new valve, but there many models and I havent been under the truck yet.
What exactly is your problem? Don't guess at what could be wrong explain what is happening with your truck. For example.. the truck runs and drives fine when the rear tank is selected but dies when the front tank is selected.
The rear tank is full, but cant get to it. Nothing seems to be working...from the switch down to the valve. Ive considered tearing the entire line out and starting fresh, but may not be cost effective if only a simple fix. Whats the recommendation?
Im gonna check the entire system. I bought the truck used and the last owner said he never used the rear tank. Could the selector valve possibly be sealed closed from non-use?
Selector valves do have problems but they function on fuel pressure alone there are no external controller so when they malfunction it is far more common for them to leak fuel from one tank to the other. You seem to be focused on this valve but it's more likely you have a pump problem and that is pretty easy to test for, select the rear tank and put the key in the run position, then ground pin A in the EEC test connector under the hood. This should make the low pressure rear intank pump and frame mounted high pressure pump run continuously and you should be able to hear the pump in the tank if you get up close to it. If you don't hear it then it's dead simple as that.
I had this problem with my current truck it is a 1989 f250 xlt lariat the best thing to do sense it is your most likely problem is the rear pump went out. When you take it out make sure you make sure the tank is clean and the supply and return lines are free of crap had to replace mine after having to get a 38 gallon rear tank and a new pump Due to it not driving right found that the previus pump put rust in the lines but there is nothing a can of carb cleaner cant fix. If all else fails double check the lines and make sure there is no cracks in it.
Thanks for the advice! I will have my mechanic look thoroughly through the system. I also will replace any filters, lines, etc. I heard fords are durable and long lasting...I plan on one lasting a few more years. Now, anyone know what brackets to use when replacing front bench with a 40/20/40. Someone put buckets in and the seats, brackets are different.
