i have a 92 f 350. with a 6.9 l idi motor that was rebuilt, i took out hte tired 351 windsor and installed my 6.9 l. the truck ran great until the tranny went to tranny heaven, the trannny was a e4od, i wan to install the zf five speed in. my question is wiring for the computer, crossmember placement and the clutch hole on the firewall, are there templates on teh firewall and console for the conversion, any replies would be helpful, it sucks have no truck, gotta stay home and be with the wife full time.
Neither the 6.9 IDI nor the ZF transmission needs a computer. You can unplug the E4OD wiring harness at its connector on the left fender well, and the ZF harness will plug right in.
There is a bolted-on plate on the firewall next to the brake booster; take that plate out and the clutch master cylinder will go there. You have to cut a big hole in the floor for the shifter; get the removable floor plate from a donor truck.
The ZF crossmember is different from the E4OD crossmember, but it will bolt right in. Don't have to drill holes in the frame. The bad news is, you have to move the two crossmember gussets to a different spot, and in order to get the bolts out of the frame you have to raise the cab. I'm currently doing this swap, and raising the cab is my next task
You also gotta get flywheel bolts (the bolts for the flex plate are too short) and a starter (ZF and E4OD use different starters). Have fun!
