I am working on a video about oil filters. I thought it would be interesting to open some up. Most companies dont make their own filters anymore, instead a few companies produce filters for many companies. I am looking for as many 7.3 oil filters as I can find, one of each brand. I am seeking help from the brotherhood. I have already acquired the following:

Fram Tough Guard
Fram Extra Guard
Fram Ultra Guard
Mobil 1
STP
Bosch
Motorcraft
WIX (Soon)
Napa (Soon)

There are several that I am having trouble locating locally. If anyone knows that they can get them for me I would be very appreciative. For now I am looking at OEM replacement filters only, and later may look into things like the Donaldson BHOF, Amsoil, etc.

Here is what I'm looking for:

Baldwin B7039*
K&N HP6001*
Purolator Pure One PL44872*
Purolator L44872*
AC-Delco PF2174
Donaldson P550371*
John Deere TY24772
Carquest 85734
AC-Delco PF2174
Amsoil ASF99
Amsoil SDF99
AFE Proguard D2 44-LF004

Filters with an asterisk are of most interest. Also, anyone who has any good literature on oil filter material, construction or the like, I would welcome the reading material.

Are you wanting new or used filters?

Also, can you share your plan with how you're wanting to use the info, and what kind of info you're trying to accumulate on each brand's element?

New. It really depends what there is to find. I am interested in finding out quality of filters, if there are some to avoid, etc. I am interested in them for some reason, and just want to learn about them. Build quality, materials, design, etc...

Baldwin

I have been running Baldwin since my first oil change. having worked in the mining industry most of my life, I pretty much see Baldwin and Fleetgaurd on every piece of 7x24x365 run equipment. Here is some help finding the baldwins, i bought a case of 12 a few years ago, cant remember now what they cost then.

I'm still curious about the criteria you're going to use for the evaluation. I've been in the paper manufacturing business for over 27 years as a chemical engineer, and have been QA Manager in an operation with four large machines making nearly 3,000 tons/day of paper. There are an abundance of different testing characteristics with which to make both qualitative and quantitative evaluations, but it takes highly specialized equipment to compare things like "bulk density", "porosity", "basis weight", "caliper", "smoothness", "absorbancy", "open area", etc... all of which can dramatically affect a filter media's ability to filter our oil.

If I were still working directly in a plant, I could get access to some of this testing equipment for you, but can no longer do so in my role as a consultant.

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but the bottom line is that this kind of evaluation is not nearly as straight forward as one might think, and without the ability to measure very small differences in paper characteristics, it will be virtually impossible to draw many really solid conclusions aside from constructability.

Just go with the lowest micron rating as that is all that really matters

Keep in mind that places like NAPA and Carquest have different grade filters. I know some of the filters both companies offer are made by Wix.

Im not expecting to test filters likenuou said. Im more interesred in apparent quality. For example, how is the filter constructed, is it put together well, variamces in design etc. We all know the aftermarket 6.0 oil filters suffer from design differences due to patents. That's what im curious about mostly. Another example is how everyone hates Fram for various reasons. Ive opened several filters and it appears Fram is manufactured by the same people as some other brands. I know this doesnt mean they are certainly the same filters.. but its interesting. Also, the Fram Tough Guard, and Fram Extra Guard, are identical, even though the Extra Guard costs more.

That is some interesting info. I didn't expect to see the fram filters to do that well. I thought the baldwin would have done better and the mobil 1 did great also. To me its not the price but how well it filters and how well its made and where its made like in the USA. I didn't see a donaldson filter on there.
