Was it an OEM filter and cap? If not get OEM only. If it was get a new OEM filter and cap. Possible defect or it was damaged.

If it is OEM, then the only thing I can think is you may have cracked it over tightening it.

Make sure you use a large 8 point socket, not a 16 point socket or a drive extension, this will crack the cap quickly. Also, torque value is important, this cap seals with a no ring, lube it and tighten carefully. Otherwise the cap breaks. I inspect mine every oil change very closely, as I am sure it fatigues over time.

I do believe OEM cap does use a O-ring on it. New O-ring comes with the Motorcraft filter. As mention before make sure you have a known good OEM cap. yours may have been damaged.

mhoefer put his space in the wrong place and is actually saying it does seal with an O ring. When tightening, tighten just till the cap bottoms out. The O ring seals not the threads.
