360 swap for 351w

Hey everyone, I put this in the 302/351 section, maybe this section is better place for it? Anyway,

I have a 360 as of now in my truck, matefd to a np435.
The 360 is slowly dieing and I cannot afford to rebuild at this time. I plan on moving mid August, from Vancouver BC to almost the yukon and will be driving, and need to MAKE it there, heh.
So....Ive been looking for an alt. on what I should do and rememberd my old car is sitting at a friends house in his driveway. Well was last time i rtalked to him.

Its a 73' merc montego, with 351w. That runs quite well.. (tranny slips)
So I thought maybe I could just stick this bad boy in there and that will do for a while.
I will need a bellhousing, and right motor mounts, any other help would be most appreciated.
Thanks for any help

Motor mounts and a bell-housing should get you there. you may also have to move the tranny x-member and/or change the drive shaft length.

What's wrong with the 360?

Ahh cool cool,
I just moved and dont have net yet(neighbours comp rite now)

Yeah, the 360 valves are makin noise, also there is no oil being juiced around when i took off valve cover....not to good rite? Low compression in 2 cylinders, head gaskets, some other seals. Im going to keep it and rebuild it once I get up north and make some money.

Ive never dismantled an engine before, so lots is new to me.
Exhaust...Ill just rig it up somehow, and pilot bushing at this moment i dont even know what it is.

1 more thing...can i use the bellhousing thats on the 351 now, or do I need one specific for my application?
Thanks fellas. *cheers*

The 360 and 351 use different bell-housings.

run a compresion check, and tell us what you get.

you can probbaly fix any of the 360 problems for less money and certainly les time than it will take to convert to the 351.

Just my humble opinion.

In my experience, if an FE will run, it doesn't need much to be dependable. They usually run up until something big breaks, and that's pretty rare.

Let us know more about your problems. These guys here know their stuff and may be able to make you feel better.

Ya, ya know, I was begining to think it will probly be more work to put the 351 in, than just fix the ol' 360.

I think I will just do up the 360. My plans change everyday, hehe.
When i did a compression test in hmmm, march I think, cylinders 2 and 7 read 90 psi. 1,3,5,8 read 130 psi, 4,6 read 140 psi.

But I basicaly just want to get it running nice and clean so I dont have to worry much on my 1200K journey.
I know the 360 and 351 use diff bellh'ing, but if i ripped the 351 and the bellh'ing out of my old car,, would that work? oh well..doubt im gonna do it now anyway.
Hahah I dont want to overwhelm you guys with all my problems,
I will try and do another comp test soon as i can. right on, I appreciate all the help.

Comp test from before indicates that a rebuild is due some point in the future. you can use the entire transmission from the other vehicle, but as said before it may change the location of the x-member, drive shaft lengths etc. It will require different motor mounts.

Has your 360 let you down yet?

Nope, the 360 has been pretty good to me, I like the 360 and wanna rebuild it . I can still spin the 35's on dry pavement. And that frap noise i beleive is the valves, last nitght I drove all over town withouth that noise occuring, then I stop at 7-11, I get back in and get on the road and it starts again. And I think I said before it speeds up with engine speed but, I dont think it does, very little increase if so. Almost same at idle as half throttle. Well, I got paid yesterday and I have some cash left over so I should go get some manifold gaskets.

1 other thing, about my motor mounts, (BTW, I didnt put the 360 in my truck) Where they bolt to the frame there should be four bolts. BUT There is only 2 bolts on each one beacuse where the other two would go there is gaps in the frame.
Good Stuff guys, thanks.
