My battery light came on driving from downtown the other day. Tuner read that it was putting out 14.3 V when I left and by the time I parked it was putting out only about 11.5 V. Went to start it to move it to a warm garage (Winter is being brutal with temperatures in Chicaaago) and had nothing.
Have since pulled batteries to charge them.
I'm pretty sure from the code I pulled it needs the alternator replaced. I have read mixed reviews on the forums saying the 6.4 is picky about what alternator you replace it with. Do I need to get a Motorcraft replacement in order for it to not throw any codes?
It has the Extra Heavy Duty Alternator (200 Amp) single.
Thanks. Having a rough winter so far with the truck here.
I had to replace mine and could not find an aftermarket one. Had to pay 400.00 plus just for the alternator then I put it in by myself. Really wasn't as bad to install as I was thinking it would be. Good luck.
It was actually easier than the shop manual said. I was able to just remove the inner fender guard and then reach my arm in-between the fan and loosen up the belt. Then 4 bolts later alternator came out. Installation was even easier.
Just hope this one lasts at least as long as the first!
