Air filter for 7.3

What's the best air filter out there for a 7.3 to get more hp/tq with out damaging anything?

Personally, I prefer the Ford/Donaldson AIS Severe Duty Intake System FA-1759. It's quiet and has an exceptional element.

That being said, I don't know if you'll get any seat of the pants hp/tq regardless of what you put on. And, You won't "damage" anything by adding a quality filter/Intake by itself. You may also wish to consider the Walker BTM to open up the other side. Fairly quiet with little or no drone effect.

i use a 6637 purchased from clay at RiffRaff diesel.
with that said, an air filter will not increase HP or torque output, that is accomplished with a chip to change the computers tuning.

I agree with the above. Everything I have read has been AIS. It is OEM/Quality and has the best numbers, and if you have any warranty worries you dont have to fret. If you are looking into loud the 6637 is loud and cheap. I have also heard good things about the SB and AFE but they are more noisy as well. I have noticed a loud 'roar' with my buddies AFE.

The cheapest (and perfectly great-performing) setup is the 6637 kit from Riffraff. I want to say it's around $80. It may be a tad louder, but unless you're opening up the exhaust, you probably won't notice much difference. You are, however, making the proper first step. Next step - get the EBPV-cancelling turbo pedestal and EBPV-free turbo outlet from Riffraff ($80 and $120), and do a 4" exhaust all the way back. It will really, really open things up for you. Oh, and the AIH-delete plug as well ($15). The AIH blocks a bunch of air coming into the turbo, and the EBPV makes the exhaust out of the turbo turbulent, even when it's in the "open" position. Do all of that, and you'll be amazed at the difference in throttle response and power - all without a chip. And you're lowering EGT's. Then, you'll be on the right track for future upgrades - injectors, tuner - which is exactly where I'm at now. As for the noise after doing the turbo/exhaust side of things, it's not bad, and I don't mind it one bit. What's even better is the whistle that you get from the turbo, through the exhaust, once you get rid of all that crap that's keeping it from exhausting smoothly. I did keep a muffler (not the stock one); a lot of guys straight pipe it. Good luck.

I use the 6637 from Clay at Riffraff, only had sense October of 2013 and so far I like it a lot. It is loud you can hear it sucking in all that air doesn't bother me.

I used the 6637 for a while. It was OK, but way too loud for me. I'm not really comfortable with the open element either, and really didn't like the look of the cover.
I went to the AIS and will not put anything else on the truck. Much quieter, and the truck seems to perform better with it. Could be in my head though..
Besides, the efficiency is second to none at 99.95%. And that can be verified through Donaldson's website:

Has anyone actually tested air flow and air density for stock vs 6637?

AIS took everything my desert environment could dish out and my 80 HP tune on a stock truck lasted 20,000 miles (one year) on a single filter. It's the same filtration media used on the 6.0, the 6.4, the 6.7, and was developed for use in the Middle East. Ford likes it, I like it, and it's dead quiet. I never knew what the compressor sounded like (under the hood) until I had to go bigger... but I sure knew what the turbine sounded like (whistle out the tailpipe with 4" exhaust).

i got 40,000 out of the first 6637 with only cleaning the cover once a year. it still looked like new when i put the new one on, so i put the old one on the 88.

Look at the flow specification (CFM) on this page [LINK]... it's repeated anywhere you look for this part number.

After perusing the information in this PDF [LINK], look at the air intake flow for a Navistar T444 (our 7.3L at 190 HP). Page 8, bottom-right.

I had the 6637, I switched to the AIS because its quieter and supposedly better. It's a quality filter system.

I have the 6637 now and with the upgraded injectors(160/30's), I am told it doesn't flow enough. It is smokey off the line when I dump on it, then cleans up as the RPM's come up, but I am going to move up to probably the S&B here soon.

My how things change.

There was a time around here when a guy would get kicked in the nuts for saying anything remotely negative about the 6637.
