Left: S&B - for my stage II injectors. Not as quiet as the AIS.
Right: AIS - dead-quiet under the hood. Stage II injectors are just a little too big for this.
The stock air box is notorious for leaking. If you are going touse a snorkel, I assume you are doing this in case the intake is submerged. I would not recommend that with a box noted for it's leakiness...

Just my very humble opinion...
It's not so much for water but for the dust when I'm on the trails following other people.
Exactly, ^^^as Jason already stated, the stock box is prone to warping and allowing dirty, unfiltered air in around the filter media. It is the reason I, and many others ditched the stock set up.
Thanks for the input. After looking the S&B and the AIS I think I'm gonna lean towards the S&B looks easier to make a plate to attach the snorkel to in the future.
Ah... now that I know the goal - the AIS is sealed everywhere except its snout. The S&B housing is a sieve - a lot of it would need sealing for your purposes. In addition to that, the snout on the AIS is a two-piece - making modification of the unit much easier.
Im with tugly on this the ais looks a lot easier to get to your goal then any other option and it's an upgrade but if you're stuck on using the stock box do your best to seal it up.
I love my AIS. After running stock and 6637 for extended periods I wouldn't go with anything else. And for dusty conditions the AIS is arguably the best out there.
To answer the original question... Paper is your best bet. Oem equivalent. If your stock box is in good shape I see no reason to swap. Will the snorkle replace the stock lid? As long as the box is in good shape, has all of the clips, and you use a good filter, sealing should be no problem. I have a perfectly good stock box you can have for the cost of delivery if yours is cracked or anything. You would just need to use your clips from your box as mine were canabilized for other FTE members.
That said, I have the ais and love it. If you can fab a snorkle on the ais would be a great combo. I know a lot of guys down under run snorkles for the same dusty reason you want to. Plus, they look cool
I run either the Purolator PURE ONE or the Fram EXTRA/TOUGHGUARD filters in my stock air box, always get excellent oil reports telling me that my AIR filter is doing its job just fine!
Az-Ray... I see your Excursion is a 2000. I have a 2000 also. From this point of view, I'd like to encourage you to examine your stock air box very closely. Ford made several improvements to the factory airbox between 2000 and 2001. These improvements are subtle, but were critical enough for Ford to issue a TSB with an updated airbox replacement kit. Do you know if you have this kit? I can help you identify it, if you are interested.

It actually doesn't have a stock box anymore. The PO put a K&n on it. That why I was looking to go back to stock something better.
Buy a stock box or buy an AIS? Show of hands, guys: Does anybody recommend against the AIS?
I don't have one but if I had the option, tugly I'm still with you on this one... Unless he could get what hes looking for for free or next to it and make it his own like he originally had planned.
