My book says 80-90 Ft. Lbs. It does have an note that says Cylinder Head Bolts Marked "FT" 110 foot-pounds.

For tightening order, this image is almost what my book has (I can scan it later for you)

My book has 3 and 4 switched, and 7 and 8 switched.

Check the bolt lengths, the four longer ones go where the dowel hole is. (8 & 9 in the image).

That torque spec sounds a little high to me. I go in steps 55-65-75 ft/lbs. My book shows the tightening sequence as Harriers book states (odd numbers on top, even on bottom), not as his image shows. Doesn't matter where front is, same on both sides.

Good idea to re-torque after a couple of heat cycles.

Maybe you should consider buying a Shop Manual?? They have them on CD cheap...

Well shoot, I didn't notice odd on top even on bottom. That would have been easier.
Here is the section from my manual. Yes, I would suggest getting the manual it is a great help. Also, this book on cd. 1948-56 Ford Truck Master Parts Catalog CD - HiPo Parts Garage
It is well worth the $22.

Also the tightening in steps is highly recommended.

Capelo, ensure you install the head gaskets correctly also, the tabs need to go a the upper front corner of the block/heads.

Joe, Wow that's high. Both my '55 and '57 Ford Car Shop manuals say 75 as does James Eickman's "Ford Y-Block" Book.

It does seem high. The manual has that torque for the 279-317 motors. The part I scanned says 90 but the back of the book has 80-90. It has 75 for the 223, 239 and 256 motors.

Joe, The 279-317's are a different animal than the 239/256/272/292/312 Ford Y-Blocks.

Sorry, I don't. Wish I did. Maybe next time...

The only pictures I have of my current engine are on the stand and installed (this one went in the Ranchwagon in the background).
