Honestly I'm not impressed by his 5.4 seems pretty gutless until it's rapped up, I drive a truck with a 300 in it daily and it is by far a better truck motor. However he spanks that truck in a race. If I'm looking for power with bolt ons do you guys think I should stay EFI or a good carb/intake?
Shouldn't the 5.4 be more compared with a 5.8?? The same with a 5.0 compared to a 4.6?
Anyhow, one of my best friends has a 99' supercab with a 5.4, lifted with 33's. He gives it hell everytime he drives it....and keeps it out of overdrive. Until I told him 10 minutes worth of how overdrive will actually SAVE you what little mileage he's got....Not sure if it's the quick response of no-overdrive or the engine, but it is peppy.
My truck is decent for 'get-up and go', but then again, I have a light foot so I don't lose any more mileage. Speaking of which, I have another friend who has a supercharged 5.4 lightning, which has over 400 hp...and he only gets about two mpg's less than my bone stock (motor wise) 5.0
Yes ideally but I don't have a 351... yet, so I am wondering how much I need to spank the 5.4
Best thing you can do is dump the speed density for mass air, that gives you sooooooo many more options as far as cams go. After that track down a '99 and earlier 5 litre explorer in the junkyard and snag the GT40 heads off of it, then a good set of headers and a decent dual exhaust or atleast a 3 inch single. Read up on the "six liter tuneup" (timing bump to 13btdc, plugs gapped at 55, good wires and a good coil)
That was 2 years ago with basically just a fresh .30 over 302, gasket matched gt40 heads, e303 cam, and a extremely ported factory truck intake. Even that combo with a sloppy shifting 4r70w was still enough to beatup on Triton fords, hemis, and LS chevy trucks. I'll have to get a new video up of it now that I've invested in AFR heads, a Trickflow track heat intake manifold, and finally have the truck tuned somewhat right. Surprised the absolute hell out of a buddy of mine when a 18 y/o F150 was glued right next to his '09 WRX STI all the way til I run out of gears at about 122mph lol.
I spanked my buddies dad's 05 dodge hemi in m 95 f150 351... He still says he won but there is no way in hell! That was the second daybinhad it before my tune up and timing bump and exhaust
