It's a world of difference. The 5.0 puts the 5.4 to shame. I had a 2005 & 2009 5.4. The 5.0 really puts the power down. It is a little lower on torque but its not noticeable. My 2012 would like the tires of from a stop. Something the 5.4 would never do
I have a 2009 5.4 and a 2013 5.0 - the newer truck is much more refined in the way the transmissions shifts. I also notice a bit more power with the 5.0 but that truck doesn't usually have as much in the bed as the 5.4 which usually has about 800 lbs in the bed because it is my work truck.
i would love to see how the 5.4/6speed 2010 performs against the new 5.0/6speed. I'm looking at buying a used 2010 with the 5.4/6speed/3.73 combo only because i cant afford the new OVERPRICED 5.0
I'm not complaining about my 2009 5.4...I dirve it almost every day, loaded down and starting out at 7200ft. That means it is down about 21% on it's total power output as compared to sea level. It still can hold 75 mph going up a 6% or worse grade. It hasn't ever had a problem in 100K miles.
i yell about the 5.4 because in my F350 in my sig it just ain't enough. Yes i have 112k with never a problem, it has hauled ever load of dirt, rock, cinder block, wood, mulch i have ever loaded the bed with, its towed numerous Chevy cars and trucks for my cousin who is the Chevy drag man and hes always buying and selling them Chevy's so my F350 is always the tow rig, Ive towed a 16ft trailer with a 3000 series john Deere tractor with bucket and backhoe attachments for the past six years for my family job. But the 10mpg and just shameful unloaded speed has got to go!

It out performs it. My brother in law has a 2010 5.4 supercrew 4x4 and I can outrun him every time. Even his with a programmer can't keep up.
I loved my 5.4s. I never had any issue with them and they always ran great. But i would take the 5.0 over the 5.4 now that I have had them both for an extended period of time each. My 5.0 now has 48 miles and no issues. Hopefully it stays that way for another 50k.
How do you figure overpriced? It's only a 1k option above the base V6. The biggest price sink on these newer trucks is the trim level. If you can live without leather, a flow through console and some of the other bells-whistles, you can get a nicely equipped STX or XLT for low 30s. I purchased my truck new, and was out the door for high 20s. There are usually many incentives available also.
Just throwing this out there, everyone has a budget!
just checked out the Ford build page, just built a STX and i can only get the ext cab 6 foot bed with the 3.73 gears which sucks because i want the crew cab for the kids this time....
I have a 2010 regular cab, long bed two wheel drive and a 2011 crew cab four wheel drive. The 2010 is a 5.4 and the 2011 is a 5.0, both trucks have a 3.55 rear end. The trucks are comparable in performance but keep in mind the 5.4 has less weight to pull around. The 5.4 will burn the tires off with little effort, it feels like it has more low end torque then the 5.0. The 5.0 won't break the tires loose very well but that may have more to do with tires then anything else. The 5.0 is faster there are no two ways about that and the transmission shifts a lot better.
Pulling with the trucks is about the same. It is often said that the 5.4 likes high rpms, if that is the case the 5.0 loves high rpms. I don't think you can go wrong with either truck, I love both of mine but the newer trucks with the 5.0 are a little nicer and do a little better on gas. Also, I really like the power steering in the newer trucks better.

Correct. The 5.4 makes more torque than the 5.0 until 4k RPMs.
Just whipped this up, data from here. For your viewing pleasure:

Exactly why I went with the STX. I didn't want the fancy sync touch screen and all that, I like things more basic. I did spring for the carpet flooring however. Luckily, ford now has 10 (I think) trim levels, so you can get a stripped down XL all the way up to a fully equipped Limited with all the bells and whistles. Truly something for everyone.
