Hopefully someone out there can help me. I recently purchased a '91 E250. The problem I'm having is that I can't get the headlights and parking lights on together. (or the dash lights either for that matter)
I bought a new switch from a local parts store and that one does the same thing. I proceeded to buy another one from the local Ford dealer only to find that one does the same thing also.
It seems as if I hold the switch **** halfway between the 1st and second stops I can get them all to come on, but it won't stay that way while driving.
Is this a common or known problem?? Any suggestions on how to fix or to actually get a part that works correctly??
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-May-02 AT 10:22 PM (EST)]Do you have a good ground and is the wire connection tight at the switch? the only other thing is the switch even though you have gone through two switches could be there bad third times the charm(just a thought)
hey, thanks again. yes, good ground, clean terminals, tight connections. it really feels like its in the switch itself. by that I mean that at the first stop (intermediate) no lights are on although the parking lights should be. At the second stop (fully pulledout) the headlights are on but the parking and dash lights are not. I CAN MAKE THEM COME ON BY CAREFULLY POSITIONING THE SWITCH SOMEWHERE INBETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND STOPS............ weird isn't it?
I know this sounds stupid, but my 93 pickup did the same thing. I went and got a new switch and replaced it, but it didnt fix teh problem. Its exactly what you are describing. After all this i decided to check the fuse and it was bad. It just made enough connection at certain times to work. Dont ask me how. Take a look at it.
I checked and double checked that fuse and it tested good. Just on a whim I replaced it with a new fuse and the entire problem cleared up.
I held the old fuse up to a bright lite with a magnifying glass and, sure enough their was a hairline crack in it. Yet............ it still tested good out of the fuse block........ go figure!!!
THANKS SOOOOO MUCH FOR THE HELP...... I PROBABLY NEVER WOULD HAVE FIXED IT WITHOUT THAT HELPFUL INSIGHT!
