Tailgate not level when open

I have noticed that the tailgate doesn't sit level when opened, the cables are too short for it to horizontal. The rear of the gate is 1-1/2" higher than the front. The cables need to be about a 1/2" longer for it to sit right.

Anyone else notice this?

Yes, this is true on my truck as well. I'm not sure why it was designed this way, I'm assuming it's not an oversight. Doesn't appear to cause any concern but it is odd.

Could it be a clearance issue with the bumper?

The cables measure 20.5". I am wondering if the cables from a 1999-2010 have the same ends, are longer and could be used to get it level.

1/2 inch shorter cables, 1 inch of cable per truck = lots of $$$$$$$

I think there was some discussion on this in the superduty forum. I think someone put the 13 gate on an older truck and it had the not level issue also. I'd imagine he used his original cables...........Maybe a seach over there would net something. I'm not sure if the thread was directly or indirectly related to the issue.

Mine is the same way, and it is dumb. Only thing I can think of is could it have something to do with getting the angles right for the integrated step. Lowering the gate further would modify the step angle too, but I'm not sure how much overall and if it's something you'd notice or not..........

just put a bunch of stuff on the tailgate and stretch those cables to the correct length...or try I guess.

I have the step and it makes sense to control the correct angle for the step.

If you have a step tailgate and the only thing about it that bothers you is that it isn't completely level, I can't do anything but laugh. That damn tailgate is such a mess with that stripper pole that it wouldn't matter how level it actually is.

Cables stretch when under load.

Yeah now I have one side's cable slightly longer than the other.

The truth....

I have beat my step tailgate to death with the fifth wheel hitch and forklift. It all still works but gawd, I wish it were flat and steel.....

Personally I think it's the torsion rod cocking the gate within the the hinges, it kinda picks up the one side.

You can buy the original tailgate plate for like 80 bucks if I remember correctly and remove the "stripper pole".
