You can buy the original tailgate plate for like 80 bucks if I remember correctly and remove the "stripper pole".
Does that include the replacement tailgate top cap? I have the step-gate and never use it. The top of the tailgate is a pain when you lift it with one hand and the top separates where the step is. I'd pay 80$ to be out of it.
If you have a step tailgate and the only thing about it that bothers you is that it isn't completely level, I can't do anything but laugh. That damn tailgate is such a mess with that stripper pole that it wouldn't matter how level it actually is.
No I specifically didn't spend extra for the goofy step. If I'm parked downhill I can barely set my beverage on the tailgate without it falling over. Using a camp stove requires shiming and is unstable at best. Need to fix this simple issue.
cant believe he anger rtowards the step, while aybe not as nimle asi once asmy legs are stil longer then 95% of you her and I love it for gtting into the bed.

For me it isn't about the step, I like that part of it. It's the stupid safety post that I can't stand. I never use it and it is always in the way on the tailgate. Forget about sliding something out across the tailgate because that POS will always catch it.
My tailgate doubles as a work table more than I need a pole. Ford could have applied a little more engineering to the pole to have the pole/step but also a flat work surface for the tailgate. If I were to order a truck (purchased mine off the lot), I would not select the tailgate step as an option.

I almost did not order it on mine. But then the salesman said he had a few guys just take the pole off, so I went out and looked at some and the pole looked to be easily removable. It's still on mine for now, and I never use it, but that step is money very well spent! I got tormented by my wife and buddies for my "old man" step. But now any time one of them goes in my truck they pull the step out first too. If / when I mess the pole up I'll take it off and get the inside of the gate lineX'd. But it being there doesn't annoy me that much.
I measured the cables on a 2000 SD, they are about 1/2" longer (~21")
I bought a set of Dorman 38540 cables at O'Reilly's for $15. They are also 21" long, and took a few slight modifications to get installed 'correctly'. With the longer cables it is not perfectly flat but much improved and well worth $15.
This thread is like a bad wreck on the NASCAR channel or one of them TWERKING videos on youtube... you know it's horrible but you just can't look away...
