My son bought an '08 Ranger Sport with the 6 cylinder engine. When we went to change the oil and filter a few months ago, we were both cursing at the gyrations and contortions we had to go through to loosen and snake the filter out. Seems like it took us both: one under and another reaching down through the engine compartment. It's about time to change oil and filter again.
I take my oil filters out from the underside. Hand tight on, means hand loosen to take off. My 3.0L and 4.0L both come out from underneath without jacking the truck up at all. I go in behind the front wheel.
Most all stores that sell oil also sell a tool that slips onto the closed end of the filter. The tool includes a 3/8-inch square hole so you can insert a 3/8 ratchet drive extension to loosen the filter and then spin the filter off.
...sounds like a 3.0, ive heard of complaints before about its oil filter location. my 4.0 isnt bad, but the taurus i had had a 3.0, and it was right above the starter, you oiled the starter any time you changed oil in that car.
On my '00 Ranger (3.0), the oil filter had a small funnel attached to one of the exhaust manifold bolts, with a rubberhose attached, that routed any spilled oil to go under the truck, and into the oil drain pan.
I just reach over the left front fender, loosen the filter, then guide it up and out of the truck.
To replace, I'd fill the filter half-way with oil, then lower into place and hand tighten.
No muss. No fuss.
I had thought about getting an oil filter relocating 'kit', but, never did.
Thanks for all the opinions, guys. I always hand-tighten, but rarely can remove a filter with just hand pressure. I have an assortment of oil-filter wrenches, but this filter is just a PIA. The Jiffy Lube isn't a bad idea if the local's workers didn't appear to have a collective IQ above 65. After nearly losing an engine because they didn't tighten the oil drain plug, I haven't trusted them since. And they denied that it was their problem!
