I have a 96 Ford f super duty with a 7.5l and E40d after about 30minutes of driving O/D light will flash but still operate in all gears. Pulled codes and got
628 excessive converter clutch slippage and 657 fluid over heated. Now I have not felt a shudder which would indicate slippage like my 91 ford E40d does on lockup. And the temp never got above 210 until the light started flashing or I came to a stop. and front seal leaks also which in a tsb a read of another forum claimed that leaks can cause that code.
Any input would be helpful as I have already replaced solenoid pack after it got fried when the problem started last Monday
Shudder doesn't usually happen when there is slippage. 99% of the time even an experienced person can't tell when it's slipping.
It is very common for the torque converter clutch apply piston to crack. This will lower the torque capacity of the converter clutch, which means it slips under load.

The fix is to replace the torque converter.
Ok which I probably shouldn't drive it until I replace converter so metal doesn't go everywhere.
And about the shudder like on my 91 ford f150 same trans just not as strong. almost everytime the converter locks up it shudders a little or when it unlocks it shuddees some. When it shudders is that more of the metal surface the clutch grabs is rough out rigid or something different altogether

That is very unlikely to happen.

Something different altogether. It is caused by a change in the fluid and the friction surface. Sometimes shudder can be fixed by changing the fluid for fresh MERCON V.

No, not so much. It usually doesn't slip enough to generate a ton of heat.

Ok it did start after front seal blew out and left me stranded.
And also it overheating was my fault I had two external coolers in series and diffinitly restricts the fluid flow with 2.
Thanks for all your info I'll let you know how it's does one I replace seals and the converter
Ok got transmission back in everything is pretty good except 2nd has gone crazy, if you make a turn without coming to a stop there's no 2nd and it will go to first then 3rd and manual 2nd didn't do anything. Then if you stop and accelerate fRom a stop it's his 2nd like normal, shifter was misaligned at first and seemed to be the problem cause there was no 2nd at and converter locked up in reverse which it's fine now since I realigned shifter. Could a internal leak cause this or maybe solenoids are bad even though I just replaced them or should I look at the MLPS. Any input would be appreciated
After replacing filter it seemed to get better but issue is still there and it doesn't happen until the trans gets to operating temperature which makes ne think it's a seal leaking or worn pump. Could a worn pump cause the trans to not downshift to second and only upshift to 2nd after a stop and converter clutch still drifts on reverse. I also had a theory that autozone filter necks were slightly skinnier then normal and maybe it's drawing air around the filter seal into the pump and I no there's tsb on the front pump should I look into that
And now man 2nd works again when I experience the 2nd gear issue before brother second gear would would unless I stopped or went to neutral then call to drive
