Hello all, I'm getting ready to change out manifolds on my 69 390. 2 barrel to 4 barrel cast. Is there anything I should be aware of that might make this a bad experience. I've heard something about oil pump shaft and silicone at the rear corners. Any other hints would be appreciated. THX David GO HAWKS
Have a helper to assist in removing the old manifold and to install the new one. Them iron beasts weigh 82 lbs.
Installing a new thermostat? Drill a 1/8-inch hole on the thermostat flange and install it with the hole at the 12 o'clock position. This will allow trapped air to escape when filling the cooling system.
Replace the bypass hose.
Holding the thermostat in the thermo housing's recess is dang hard and tends to slip outta position. I applied small dabs of RTV to the thermostat and "pre-glued" to the thermo housing, let it set, and then installed it on the manifold.
Ditch the cork "China wall" gaskets and use RTV. Prepare the China walls with small dimples so the RTV has something to grab onto instead of a slick, smooth surface. It should look like this:
