My normal guy who usually does routine maintanance was out of his league when my truck went from fine one day to no power, smoking the next. Recommended ford dealership. They said cracked crossover, $1300 later they said, oh yeah, low compression number 2. When asked if rings, etc the reply was "it's internal". We can put a new engine in for $15000. Took it to another guy that came recommended, truck runs fine, just smokes like crazy out the tail pipe. He thought egr, turns out it was replaced. He's now looking for other possibilities but is also saying sell. I like this truck, it does what I need, it's comfortable, it's not ragged out and I hate car payments so I'd really rather fix it.

smoking?

is the EGR dry or wet?

the seals on the turbo are known to go out over time and leak oil...that causes the exhaust to smoke.

what color is the smoke?

it could also be an injector.

basically sounds like you have a problem and every mechanic around would rather throw parts than do his job and diagnose the problem properly. I suggest you find a competent mechanic.

oh yeah, and head over to the 6.0 Forum of FTE. the guys there will get you sorted out real quick. Quite a few real technicians in there, and people who've been there, done that

Smoke is whitish. Truck runs with no problem... You can just see it coming for miles

You said egr was replaced what about the egr cooler that is what fails and can cause heavy white smoke. I have heard it recommended to park down hill or raise the rear of the truck then pull the egr and see if it is wet.

I'll have to ask about that. It never occurred to me.

Thats the truth. Some years back while I was away on business, my wife was having problems with our 85 Bronco. She took it to a stealership in Webster Massachusetts to have them tell her it was a bad engine. So she had them replace the whole thing.

Long story short the old engine was sold to a friend of mine who repaired it by simply replacing the carburetor and intake manifold.

Hard to guage what is good and bad some days. But 90% is fixable the hard part is finding a mechanic that is honest enough to actually fix it. Maybe thats why no one wants to keep vehicles long anymore.

Good luck.
