I just bought a 96 EB with 351. I started it up this morning and heard what sounds like a high pitched whine, coming from the rear of the truck. almost like an electric motor. any suggestions? as soon as it stops raining, I thought I would pull the fuel pump relay and swap it for the ac relay to see if the noise stopped.
As to how loud it is I can not say. Any vehicle I have ever owned with fuel pump in tank was audible as far as I can remember. As I stated before keep fuel in tank at least 1/4 to help pump run cool. I cant speak as to the truth of whether this actually adds to longevity, but it is something I have heard over the years and it makes sense. Maybe someone who is a Pro mechanic will chime in here and help you out. I am just a backyard mech who keeps his own junk running. If it has points, plugs, carb and distibutor I can work on it. New computer controlled stuff I sometimes have to get a pro to diagnose.
Every Ford's in-tank fuel pump for fuel injection that I have heard, and I do hear most of them turn on when I turn the key to run, shuts off after a predetermined amount of time if the computer doesn't sense that the engine has started.
It's a safety feature.
If yours continues to run even though the motor hasn't been started, something is wrong.
