Crap.........that's what I was thinking. I've been looking at how to do it (vids & step by step instructions) and it looks pretty straight forward.

I'm getting ready to sell it and I think it'll sell better with the injector replaced than with that noise. What do you all think?

Replace noisy injector or sell as is?

Replace for sure. That noise will chase most buyers away.

79Supercab, I'm not sure if you have tried this or not, but try adding some 2-cycle engine oil (ash-less) to the fuel tank. You can find a bottle of cheap Supertech stuff at Walmart for a couple of bucks. See if that quiets down that noisy injector, it worked wonders for my rig.

For some reason, #1 diesel is particularly hard on these trucks. Even my reman injectors with just under 4k miles on them protest loudly to straight #1 diesel.

Good luck!

Those not familiar with the 7.3L will think the engine is about to self-"detruck" with an obnoxious injector noise... it will sink the sales sticker substantially.

That's the way I was leaning.

So I did a search in this forum for some vendors. It looks like most posts I see are for Swamp's & Rosewood. Now, how do I know if I have an AD or AE? And if it's the #8 injector I read in a couple of posts that AE's may be replaced with AD's??

I just want it to not make noise and still run decent so I can sell it. Opinions?

2002, California truck

I'm not exactly keeping up with this post but have you done the intank mods? That'll help quiet the injectors a little.

Yes... it will. 79Supercab also mentioned an intermittent miss. The in-tank mod might help that as well, and it's cheaper than a reman stick - but some troubleshooting would need to be done to determine if it's a fuel issue or a stick issue. My favorite (recent) method is to put my ear near the fuel bowl with the key on and engine off. I can hear air bubbles when they are present. The other factor is since the miss occurs at idle (as well as driving) sometimes, while running down the road just fine other times. There is no correlation to fuel demand - diminishing (but not eliminating) the possibility of a tank issue.

79Supercab - Is there any correlation between a full tank vs. 1/2 tank or lower when the miss/tick occurs?

I think you are looking at 2 separate issues

Ticking under load = exhausts manifold leak.

Miss after extended cold soak = sticking injector.

When you get the miss is it accompanied by white smoke? That would indicate a possible bad glow plug.

What kind of oil are you running? Mine sounds and feels like crap on a cold start with 15/40 Dino oil but purrs like a kitten with 5/40 synthetic even at below zero extended soak cold starts.

To narrow down a sticking injector you can use a IR temp gun on the exhaust manifold to find the cold spot when it is missing, or run a buzz test on the cold engine and listen for the quite injector.

While this is great input and I don't disagree, I also have to point out I have a lot of experience with injectors getting noisy under load. I've tracked mine down to a specific combination of ICP and PW... but I had to monitor Torque a lot to tag this combination.

So how do I know if I need an AD or AE injector? Any preference to Swamps or Rosewood?

EDIT: Ok, I looked on the Strictly Diesel site:
INJECTOR FITMENTS (select correct injector for your vehicle):
"AA" - NON-California 1994-1997 F-Series Trucks & E-Series Vans (Single Shot)
"AB" - Late 1996 and ALL 1997 California F-Series Trucks as well as
Most 97-98 E-Series Vans & Early 1999 F-Series Trucks (Split Shot)
"AD" - Late 1999 thru 2003 7.3L E-series, F-series, Excursions (Split Shot)
"AE" - Late 1999 thru 2003 7.3L #8 Injector - ORDER "AD" TO REPLACE!

So I look like I need to order an AD Injector. Right?

I do not disagree at all Tug, but I will add that your idea of a "noisy injector" to me may just be considered an "injector".

To the OP, your truck had AD injectors form the factory with the possibility of a AE aka long lead injector in the number 8 hole. You can drop an AD in #8 without problem but it may be noisy which was why ford started dropping the AE in that hole.

Those where days of owning a ford diesel, the engine was so reliable the biggest worry you had with a new diesel truck was cackle and a bad CPS.

Cackle was no big deal, really. But the CPS was kind of a bummer, especially at the price they used to get for them!

Here's what the "Strictly Diesel" site said:
