2009 Steering problems

I haven't had to post anything in the forums since I got rid of my 6.0L diesel, just been reading.
Now I need some help with what I'm starting to learn maybe kind of a common problem.
Our escape recently started loosing its power steering, once the engine is shut off the power steering is ok. Also some times you can feel a pulsing in the steering wheel.
I've been doing some googling and it looks like the dealers are replacing the steering columns to fix the problem.
My question for anyone that may know is if this is the only fix or if something like some contacts being cleaned or maybe replacing a steering sensor of some kind is the fix.
Is the only repair to really have to pay $1000-1500 at the dealer.

Thanks for any info.

As far as I know, the EPAS on the '09 is an assembly of the motor, module, sensors, etc. and replaced as a unit. Although I've read of some part of it being on eBay for sale. It may have been broken down to where some parts can be replaced but the Ford Manual states to be replaced as a unit.

I have replaced more than my share of columns on these cars for exactly the concern you describe. If you are interested in replacing only the sensor, there is a link to someone on eBAY here:

Thanks for the replies guys.
Update on my steering issue is that it was happening more frequent.
Took the Escape into the dealer Friday and long story short talked to them about getting the steering problem fixed and in the end walked out with a good deal on a trade in for a new 2013 F150 EcoBoost.
We were planning on trading up some time this summer or early fall so we decided to do it now instead of putting the money into the repair and got a good on the 13. Picked her up tonight!

Congrats on the new rig, Boston James! Be sure to post pictures so we can all be jealous of your truck.

Well that sure is the most expensive fix I have heard of to date for EPS issues.

Congrats on the new truck though.
