alright guys i need your advice. My truck is a 1986 f150 Supercab and i currently have tremendous amount of "play" in the steering. it seems to be worse steering towards the passenager side of the vehical rather than steering towards the drivers side. my question is would i be better in just replace one part at a time or just totally replace the steering componets on the truck. LMC truck offers all the parts including the steering box and they appear to be moderatly inexpensive. as always your help is greatly appreciated.
Sincerly,
John T.
i have the same problem with my 86 swb 4x4. i tightened the play in the steering box but that only made it harder to turn istead of fixing the real problem. so any info that is given would help more than one person. lol.
I don't know if it would be necesary to replace everything at once unless that's what you want to do.
I would first jack up the truck and see were the play is coming from, tie rods are a good place to start. Another place I have had troubles is in the steering column. I would evaluate the problem one piece at a time to save money(I'm a tight wad though)
Check out the whole system and then decide what you want to do with it.
i agree with beaners about the tie rod they are a quick problem to fix, but often the steering gear is going bad. im not to sure about buying from LMC on that, theirs is a reman I'd rather have a brand new piece to hopefully avoid the steering problem
Steering boxes are a common problem, If you have to tighten them they are IMO ready to replace. Checking the other components is a very good idea. My guess is that the steering boxes are wore out, like I said maybe other parts.
If you can I would replace anything that needs to be replaced. Then you can have it aligned. Someone told me once that if you spend the money and do the job right you only squeal once.
Steering box. Been a problem in every Ford truck I've owned since my '56 panel. Get new not rebuilt. Other items probably need replacement too including ball joints.
