Good morning fellow X'ers. Im having an issue with exhaust coming from somewhere on top of the engine. I've been smelling it on start up for a couple of months and thought it was a rear window or door seal.
Well, with this (insert long string of expletives here) cold weather, I was having starting issues. Turns out all my battery terminals were loose-ish and a jump would get me going. Anyway, yesterday while getting a jump, once it started I noticed exhaust spouting from the top of the engine somewhere. With the engine fan and the wind, it was impossible to figure out where exactly it was coming from.
It has the stock boots on it (ordering from RR today) and the rest is in my sig. Any help on this is appreciated.
Stay warm!
P.S. I did service the battery cables/terminals last night and made sure the batteries are charged. Im hoping for the best after work today.
Can you hear an exhaust leak? The early Excursions have the weak exhaust manifold studs and would break and cause leaks. My 2000 had that happen to it. Start it up and check real good, look and listen and let us know what you find.

Check your up pipe. Might be a good time to install the IH bellowed up pipe. Clamps has likely let go, or there is a pinhole leak getting bigger
Not looking forward to this if its the culprit. If it starts today, I'll get a video of the exhaust pouring out the top.
I was thinking (hoping) maybe one of the boots had a hole in it. After some reading I think it may be the up pipes as you said. I'll replace all the boots while Im there. Anything else while I have the turbo off?

And, I still have a starting issue. GPCM or the GP's or something.....going to do some testing Friday.
Thanks for the info.
Along with your diagnostics on the GP system, make sure the body ground wires from the batteries are making good contact and the wires are secure and tight.

I did this when I serviced my battery terminals, all was good. No starting issues now.....other than being cold as hell.
Im having real trouble paying almost double for the up pipes. I know RR makes quality stuff and "you get what you pay for" fits in most cases but with the money I save, I can add other parts to the fix. Boots and my own coating (yes, high temp), come to mind. I may order
Been doing some research on the up pipe replacement process. A few people have done it without removing the turbo. Is that possible? Also, nothing seems to be leaking now but should I do the back pressure valve service while there? I guess theres a lot of things I could do with the turbo off but what is absolutely needed?

Those are not a Riffraff made product. Those uppies are made by International.
When International first introduced the upgraded bellowed design, the pipes were selling for less than $200 bucks. The price skyrocketed within a years time when International decided to start charging an arm and a leg due to the demand by Ford owners.

Do yourself a favor and remove the turbo. By the time you end up fighting it being in your way you could just have removed it and clear line of sight.
You could put new bearings in the turbo while you have it off to prolong the life of it and save a bunch. The bellowed up-pipes are easier to install than the rigid ones.
