1984 F150/5.0. The metal piece that bolts to the passenger side manifold, and directs heated air into the carb through the flexible tube.
The carb on my truck iced up today on the way home from work. With 5 degree temperatures, and that piece missing, I can see why!
It is officially a "Shroud (carb. air cleaner air duct)". I call it a heat stove or hot air stove, but that's obviously not accurate. Part # EOSZ 9A603-A and the box may be marked E5TE 9A676-DA.
I would be curious if you can find one. I have never seen a parts place that has anything like it, don't know if Ford would even have it(doubt it). I do know some of the restoration places are starting to carry some, like for the old mustangs and such. I always made up something out of that thin aluminum you can get at Lowes.
I did make a really simple one for the old mustang I have, and it seems to work. You can buy the hose that hooks to the aircleaner in the store, and I bought the aluminum kind. I hose clamped it to the aircleaner, and then stretched it out about 4 inches on the other end(took most of the accordion folds out of it) and then took tin snips and slit one side. Opened up the slit and slipped it over the very front of the exhaust manifold, right below sparkplug #1. I think I had to use a small piece of wire to hold it on there, and it actually draws enough heated air up into the aircleaner to work. You know it's working ok when you start the engine cold, the flap is closed in the aircleaner, and when the engine is idling, you can hold your hand on the hose and it gets warm.

All show that part in stock!
Anyways, back to the topic. If your carb froze up you may be having some water in your fuel issues too. I would put a couple of bottles of HEET in the tank to dry some of the water up. Gas wont freeze and cause issues when it's cold.

If he had water in the fuel at that temp, the truck would stall. The water would have froze in the lines and blocked the fuel flow.
Carb icing is when ice builds up in the venturi of the carb, causing the engine to run rough and and if it gets bad enough, it can stall also, but it will start right back up. When the engine stalls the ice in the carb melts and then it will run ok for awhile until it builds up again.
Icing comes from moisture in the air. I am surprised though that it did ice up at that low temp. All my vehicles seemed to run ok at very low temps, the air seems to be dryer(less humid) and it doesn't seem to ice up as bad.
I came to a stop at an intersection. Pulled through the intersection, and it died. Went to restart it, and it would barely turn over, like it was hydrolocked, or the timing was way advanced. After trying for about 10 minutes, and worrying the battery would finally die, it turned over normal, and started. Drove it about 5 minutes to a friends shop, where we pulled the air cleaner, and saw frost along the top of the carb, around the choke plate. That's when we figured it was icing up.
Battery checked good.
