I have an '86 F-150 4 x 4 with the original (recently rebuilt) 351 Windsor engine. The truck came with the 49-state High Output option, so it has the Holley 4180C carb. The carb has been carefully overhauled a couple of times.
The problem I have, and have always had, is the truck idles like crap and stalls in the rain unless I let it run at the high start-up idle until it reaches full operating temp. Any attemp to drive before complete warm-up results in stalling immediatly upon letting off the throttle.
On a dry -20 below day or a 100 degree summer day, it runs perfectly, but add moisture to the mix and it stalls until normal operating temp then runs excellent.
It is not ignition related and the choke works as it should. Any help would be appreciated.
Sounds like the heat riser part of the air cleaner isn't working. Without it, the moisture in the air will freeze in the air bleeds causing a very rich condition. check the hot-air system from the exhaust manifold to the aircleaner. Also make sure that the flapper is actually closing after the engine is started. Without this working, it will do that with about any carb.
You hit the nail on the head about the heat riser not working, LxMan1, because I don't have it hooked up. When I rebuilt the 351W, I installed an MSD billet distributor, which did not clear my stock air cleaner, so I installed a 1" spacer under the carb and a 1 1/2" riser with a Ford Motorsport open air cleaner on it.
I thought that since carburetors worked in the old days without heated intake air, that the heat riser was just to reduce emissions. All of my other emissions equipment, including the vacuum damper on the driver's side Y-pipe is connected and working. I guess I will have to find a way to get pre-heated air to the carb. The stock air cleaner is kind of big and bulky to sit on top of my spacers, but I'll see what I can work out.
Sounds strange but I too have and 86 Ford 351W with carb issues. Even stranger is I live in Gorham. I spend lots of time fixing up my old beater. I would like to get in touch with you to talk truck and diagnose my problems. Let me know you recieved this post. And I'll leave my phone number or you can leave yours. I live in the Village on Green Street.
