I have a 2000 250SD. I want to replace the old stereo with a new touch screen navigation receiver. I'm looking for suggestions that can go right in with minimal modifications. I have $400-600 to spend on the unit itself. I will also be replacing speakers.
You really have a wide open field to pick from.
I would say avoid Pioneer. But that still leaves
a very large choice.
What you should do is put the items that are must
have and then list the would be nice list and see what
units fit all of the first and as many or the second list
as you can. Tat way you get something that really fits
your needs.

Your not going to be able to get a great unit for that price point. It will have minimal features. If your looking for a very nice unit that will have everything (bluetooth, video, gps navi, rva outputs, ipod etc) your looking more toward the 7-1000$ range. I'm a fan of Kenwood and pioneer units. Also a double din unit will require permanent modification of the dash to fit the unit.
You can get one like I have a pioneer bt7500 that is a fold out screen that you can add navigation to for additional money, but they cost a little less 3-400$ as an initial start up and they don't have to have the dash modified.
I agree with the others as far as buying a brand name, I myself prefer Pioneer. I suggest you save up until you can afford a quality one, it'll pay off in the long run. One thing you can do to save some money is to keep your eyes on the prices, this time of year you'll see the prices drop on them, the reason is that they're trying to get rid of the 2013 models to make room for the 2014 models which will be coming out soon, so if you don't mind if you have the latest and greatest, you can save a fair amount of money and still get a real nice system to boot. I've recently seen where Pioneers $1200 system has been selling for as low as $850 for this reason. As far as installing one of these in a 2000, I believe you may have to do some slight modifications to the dash to get a double DIN stereo to fit, perhaps someone with more experience with this year of truck can speak up concerning this.
I have a PYLE with all the toys. Touch screen, nav, cd/dvd, tilt screen, bluetooth and other options with it I don't use.
I bought from Amazon for $300.00 + or -.
The only problem is when it first powers up the volume is at 10.
I would recommended it. Had the radio for 2yrs now.
I put a double din Kenwood DVD reciever in my 03. even though I had to modify the dash a little, the install was easy. But there's no going back to the factory unit if you later decide to sell or trade your truck in. I ordered mine from Crutchfield, it came with everything to make a clean install including instructions on what i would need to modify on the dash. A Dremel or other type of rotary tool will come in handy.
I got a deal on mine but i have the Pioneer AVH-4400BH which when i got it was listed at $450 but Amazon had it for $350 and prime shipping so i got it and then bought the GPS unit a few weeks later for $280 so that's just outside your price range. I love it personally, it has built in Bluetooth as well.
I do agree however to save and spend some extra on a unit with built in navigation because when i think of it if i had just spent that money all at once it would have been an extra like $50-$100 for one that has it all built in where as now i have a second unit with wires all tucked in behind my dash.
Another thing to consider is how often your going to be using the gps. You can pick up a headunit for 400$ without navigation and a 100$ tom-tom and it effectively work the same way and save yourself 2-300$.
I agree with Justin, that is why i originally bought my headunit but i later still got the GPS unit. Once it comes time to update the maps its literally the same price as getting a new GPS so you could just get a new one every few years if you really want to keep it up to date. I have a Garmin Nuvi and they wanted like $150 or around there for the new map where as i could go out and get a new one with a much bigger screen for the same price and it has a ton more features compared to my 4 year old one. Built in GPS systems do the same thing where you need to update the map via an SD card and they charge you but you never get an upgrade so to speak you just get a map unlike buying a new GPS unit every few years. I got my unit about 6 months ago and it already has a map update .
i run the pioneer AVH-P1400DVD and its been great. it doesn't have blutooth or nav, but is upgradable if i want to down the road (which i don't have a need for pesonally, so it was silly for me to spend the money on it). controls my iDevices on the screen. lets me set up the button color to match the truck. works with the $10 backup camera i bought on amazon. and only set me back $280. my only complaint is the USB is on the front panel, instead of the back.. just not as clean, not a deal breaker for me.
i've run pioneer head units for the last 15 years, have no intentions of changing that anytime soon.
EDIT: the updated version of mine is even cheaper:
The reason I am so anti-Pioneer is the AVIC-z130bt I got had
3+ year old map data and when I called them for support I was
told I could buy the update. Yes I had told them I had JUST purchased
it and there response was you can JUST purchased the update.
I will NEVER OWN a Pioneer again. Top that with the GPS sucks.
I would take a Kenwood any day. The reason is Garmin GPE engine.
The Garmin GPS on the Kenwood unit i just put in my wifes car works pretty good. However the touch screen doesn't respond as well as i would like. It's not a sensitivity, it picks up where you touch just fine, the response lags. And i have noticed the bluetooth on both my truck and the wifes car echo's (both Kenwood units). I haven't found anything to adjust or control that. Every system will have it's quirks. It's just a matter of which quirks aren't a big deal to you.

Sucks to hear that Pioneer treated you that way and that the map data was outdated.
My Avic z150 is an absolute joy to use and the nav is spot on, stupid silly accurate.
I own a construction company and load lots of addresses for estimates and such and my experience has been quite different. The installer I had do the job told me as long as I own the unit, they'll do the upgrades for free.
Actually, I had it back to the installer for additional things I was having done and he informed me of a software update it needed. He just went ahead and did it, no questioned asked.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Pioneer based on my experience thus far and will also admit Kenwood was on the list as well during my research phase.
I've owned Pioneer units for years and they've worked wonderfully, the only reason I've gotten rid of a Pioneer system is to up-grade to newer technology. I wouldn't think of buying anything else but Pioneer. As far as Kenwood goes, I've heard of a number of bad reviews such as the one stated above. I don't know if you Pioneer guys realize it but you can now get the latest map up-date for the newer Pioneers via a new service which you can find here: http://www.navigation.com/is-bin/INT...rce=PIO-NAVCOM
